The Top 50 Albums of the Year… #29 GORILLAZ “Plastic Beach”
29. GORILLAZ “Plastic Beach”
This is easily the best Gorillaz album. No, it doesn’t have “Dare” on it, but it does have a collection of songs that are not only well made, but instant pop and hip-pop classics; from start to finish. The accomplished and somewhat refreshing production elements on “Plastic Beach” are on a higher plane and more consistent than either of their last two records, both of which had their fair share of album-fillers which made for almost-but-not-quite perfect records. “Plastic Beach” takes it to another realm.
From the hypnotic lead single “Stylo” (which is exactly the kind of song you’d hope The Presets will sound like on their next record), the ELO-ish “Superfast Jellyfish” and proper-pearler “Rhinestone Eyes” (the best and most magnificently gorgeous song on Beach) with its subtle verses and rip-snortingly psychotic chorus, Beach manages to tick all boxes. The pop, hip hop and rock influences run rampant on here, giving the finished product one of the most refined and geniusly schizophrenic accomplishments to come from Indie-pop in 2010.
