eprofile: van she

Van She are one of the most talented bands in Australia. Their live shows are incredibly tight and the musical output is heavenly, and something of an obsession of mine. The guys have an ACE new single out NOW called "Cat & The Eye," and that long awaited debut album will follow early next year, with a new single in February. To celebrate, Tomek, Michael, Matt and Nicholas as Van She feature in the first eProfile.

Robyn Aloud.

So my beloved Girls Aloud covered another beloved of mine, Robyn, today on Jo Whiley’s Live Lounge thingy. Whilst With Every Heartbeat starts of shaky (Nicola sounds awfully worried about something as she sings her opening lines; “Did I leave the oven on? Oh fuck, I think I di… Oh mai god… is Elvis taking a shit near Whiley’s bag? Fucking hell, what is he like?!…”) things eventually pick up, with what appears to be all hell breaking loose in the final minute and fifteen seconds. I’m sure Popjustice would approve. Big thank you to the lovely Don’t Stop The Pop for alerting me this had happened!

The girls also performed a nice, stripped back version for Jo of their new single, Call The Shots.

Sorry, matey, but Nicola sounds like my mom at karaoke.

  2. Hules Says:

I love that the ugly one is named after a reigndeer. Nicola? That’s a reigndeer name right?

  3. Hules Says:

OH GOD, I JUST LISTENED TO THAT SONG! OH GOD OH GOD IT’S HORRIBILE! CALL AN AMBULANCE I’M DYING WITH EVERY BEAT OF THIS TRACK…. *gerrch wheeze drops dead*

  4. phil Says:

Nicola seems a bit muddled on what a drumstick is for in that pic. Bless.

  5. Paul Says:

oh dear god. it’s not the best recording of a tune ever. They so should have done florescent adolescent instead. Silly girls.

  6. Bobby Says:

    Ahem! Bobby of Dontstopthepop here….

Yes, it doesnt start off well. Whoever is singing that first verse completely and utterly gets the wrong key, the wrong tone and destroys the feeling of the song. When Nadine comes in all is forgiven though. W-e-h is a very hard song to do. You have to be controlled, no trilling and no over the top singing. And the girls JUST get away with it (ignoring the awful beginning). Its good to see a pop act constantly setting themselves major goals. For sure they could have covered something easy. Everyone can do a Pointers 80’s classic. In fact they did! Kudos to them for having the gall to do it……..

  7. J'ason D'luv Says:

That may be true, Phil, but you should see where she pulled it out of.

  8. Samuel Says:

    Well! I liked it anyway…

  9. Adem Says:

    D’luv: Aw poor Nic!

Hules: It’s still not as bad as “Spew-di-ty” though!

    Phil: Another genius Nicola moment.

Paul: If they were to do I my beloved Monkeys, I actually would have rather heard them do “Teddy Picker” or “Brianstorm.” I can sorta picture Nadine and Sarah REALLY making it their own.

Bobby: It’s definitely Nicola in that first verse. Kimba gets a very small line later on, god bless her. I agree - it’s not the easiest track to cover and the start is a fine example as to why it’s not. But they pick it up - as you said - when Nadine pipes in, and all is forgiven.

    Samuel: So do I!

Oh you’ve got rid of blogger and I can now leave a comment! Brilliant!
