Here Come The Girls.

Some points, first, on Girls Aloud ‘in general.’

> They are the greatest pop act in the history of music.
> Sorry Blondie and ABBA, but you are definitely an equal tie for second place.
> Cheryl Cole is our lord and saviour.
> Kimberley’s talking voice is so soothing I want her to read to me before bed every night.
> Nicola deserves a lot more credit than she gets.
> Nadine says things and, because of her accent, they are nearly almost always funny.
> Sarah’s hair just keeps getting better and better with each trim, don’t you think?

And now, some points on the new Girls Aloud single, “The Promise.”

> It is AMAZING.
> It is their best single since “Biology,” in the sense that the structure is all bizarre and wondrous.
> It is not what I expected, but I am pleasantly surprised.
> It sounds like Burt Bacharach but, as xo already pointed out, sounds nothing like Duffy et al.
> It is about 700% better than the Sugababes‘ “Girls.”
> Sorry my darling Amelle but you know that I am right.
> It is also about 1,000% better than whatever song is Number #1 in your country right now.
> It has an intensely fierce chorus…
> …and an even more electric key-change.
> It is surprisingly Sarah-heavy. How MAJOR is her “Here I aaaaaaam!!” bit?
> Nicola and Kimberley both, respectively, front the tracks true pearler moments.

Actually, why not just listen to it for yourself.

“PHWOAR.” - You.

Girls Aloud, once again, DELIVER THE GOODS. The arrival of a new album from them has been the musical event of every year since they debuted in 2002 and, if we’re to believe Kimberley, will be the case for at least another five years. When the music is as magical as this (and continues to be so with every new release,) they’d be stupid to throw it all in now for potentially disastrous solo careers.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD UNIVERSAL AUSTRALIA - RELEASE THIS SONG!!!

Ladyhawke album review on its way. I had planned to have it online by today but the arrival of The Mighty Aloud’s new song has sort of gotten in the way of that…

  1. My goal is to make it through 2008 without listening to this song once. I’m pretty confidant this can be achieved.

  3. Oh Adem. You had me with everything (apart from Cheryl Cole being your lord and saviour) then you said Girls Aloud are better than Abba :O I must strongly protest at this train of thought!! They are very good indeed. But Abba good? Not quite yet. Though if they wrote their own songs they would be very close to Abba category! However, the song is ace, and yes better than Girls. WHich i still love. PS - i knew i could rely on you for a brilliant review :)

  4. RE: My GA better than ABBA remark, I actually have always thought Blondie were better than ABBA. My list was:

    1) Blondie
    2) ABBA
    3) Girls Aloud

Girls Aloud, for me, have done more than enough on the musical front for my opinion to be swayed towards them. Aside from their debut album, their albums have not had a single shit song on them. IMO anyway. ABBA had a few shit songs here and there, so did Blondie. And apart from a handfull of songs from the debut “SOTU”, every song of theirs has hit the right spot with me.

Plus, I actually get to experience Girls Aloud in the height of being a mid-20’s adult. When ABBA were last releasing songs, I was shitting in my diaper. The excitement of Girls Aloud as a band is something I get to experience in real time, rather than going back into time and exploring ABBA like I did when I was young enough to talk/walk/absorb music. Maybe if I had been able to experience the excitement of awaiting the Arrival (ho ho!) of a new ABBA single or album, my opinion would be different? But GA’s music excites me just that little bit more than ABBA. Sorry Paul…

Which is why I honestly think they’re better. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but that’s just my opinion. I’ve had a few unpopular opinions put forward on the website this year in relation to Van She; I’m going to have to get used to this it seems ;)

  5. well you know i still love you!! And hey at least you still recognise the genius of Abba… :) I am now going to dig out my Blondie albums. I may do a post inspired by all of this. All have very very good music!

  6. I’m sorry but I have to agree with Adem. Abba have always bordered on annoying for me, I take very little pleasure from almost any of their songs. As for Blondie, they were amazing during their time, but I find most of their songs a little dull after a while - there’s no real staying power there for me.

Also, I agree with Adem’s points on the mighty GA, apart from the one about Blondie and Abba being tied for second place. What about Bananarama or Eurthymics?!

  7. Lyndsey; I still think something like “Atomic” by Blondie holds up VERY well when played out. I heard 2ManyDJs play it in a set a few years ago and it seriously blew the roof off.

See, I love Bananarama and Eurythmics as well actually, and would probably say both of them are in my top 10 favourite pop groups of all time. Eurythmics are maybe 4 or 5, the Nana probably closer to 10.

I’ve never actually thought beyond the top 3 though, really…

  8. Folks all over the Inna’nets have been losing their minds over the new song. I can see why now. Loved how you put GA over ABBA or Blondie. I’m sure you are going to get quite a few comments on that alone!

  9. I hadn’t even thought about who my top three would be until this post, so kudos for that :D

I guess in terms of popularity and sucess I have to concede that Blondie and ABBA are worthier of the number two and three spots respectively.

Any thoughts on your top five?

  10. Thanks for posting this - I was away for the weekend - So i totally missed it!!

Personally, I’m not sold on it. I was hoping for something a bit dancier & edgier - like Sexy! No, No, No… or Girl Overboard.

It’s playing as I’m writing this comment - and I’m seriously compelled to turn it off - which is really disappointing!.

  12. Lyndsey: Let me think about this one a bit more!

Aaron: I honestly think if the girls had released something along the lines of Sexy or GO then I would have been really disappointed. The thing with Girls Aloud is that, with each album, they bring something different to the table. If they had launched this next record with a sound they’d already covered on the last one, I would have been incredibly worried. People were saying the same thing about “Biology” when that came out and, sure enough, only a few months later it became almost everyones favourite Aloud song.

Sally: No they are NOT Keisha.

  13. That cover! The girls never seem to trade on their looks enough, do they? Too demure. No one will buy this track. They need to show a bit more leg.

Interesting fact about the studio: I’ve shot there and it’s in Hackney and was used for the original Dragon’s Den show. For the second series the house next door was being demolished so the BBC asked if they could stop working for a payment. The builder’s demands were so extortionate that they told him to eff off and then built an exact replica at Pinewood Studios.

Just thought you’d like to know.

  14. ikes! am i gonna get shot down if i dare to say that The Saturdays’ “UP!” is actually worlds stronger than GA’s “The Promise”?

  15. HAHA, thank you Phil! I love a good story.

Will, I strongly, strongly disagree. “Up” is an amazing song, yes, but any old slapper could have sung it. It’s very well put together but that song doesn’t shout “Oh, that’s very The Saturdays, isn’t it?” This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s the band themselves I have a problem with. The Saturdays are a boring, lifeless vessel whose puppet strings are practically in complete view in both of their video clips. “The Promise” is a complicated, joyous, intelligently put together pop song that only Girls Aloud could sing because it is filled with their personalities. “Up” may be a corker, but “The Promise” delivers a much stronger sense of longevity.

  16. The Promise is genius and Xenomania should be running the country. Just why Girls Aloud haven’t cracked the Aust market (apart from JOY FM) is a mystery of gargantuan proportions
