Charge your glasses for 2010.

Happy New Year!

Here’s what I got up to, and then some.

> My New Years Eve was single-handedly the best New Years Eve celebration I’ve ever, ever had. It was small; a group of no more than 8 at one time, primarily situated most of the evening in a small outdoor laundry room, but by God did we make a lot of noise for that tiny little laundry room.

> New Years Day was celebrated at the Summadayze Music Festival, which has been running for as long as I can remember on NYD in Melbourne. I’ve been to quite a few over the last 10 (11 now?) years, but this years was by far and away the best yet. Great atmosphere, good tracks; and Solange…

> Met Solange. She was LOVELY. Here is a picture.

> Technotronic played for 15 minutes in thunder and rain. They were set to perform at 8pm but, due to being late, were then moved to 9:30. By the time their equiptment was set up, it was 9:45 and the stage closed at 10pm due to sound restrictions. Really, really disappointing. Whosever fault this was is besides the point; sure, Technotronic could have learnt to be on time for their first Australian festival appearance, and sure; Future Entertainment could have gotten the acts tech-folk to set up their equipment at 9pm instead of 9:30… but pointing the finger doesn’t solve the fact I did not hear them perform “Move This.” A somewhat bitter ending to a monstrously good day.

> Sebastien Leger took the title for my set of the day; playing Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and The Aztec Mystic’s “Night of the Jaguar” cemented that fact quite early on.

> During the recovery period (hem hem), I watched a LOT of Better Off Ted, starring Geelong’s own Portia de Rossi. Portia is from Geelong, AND SO AM I.

> Everyone is (rightly so) losing their shit over the amazing new Roisin Murphy single, “Mama’s Place.” Clicky Clicky.

> I’m not sure if I’ve said this before, but you can follow me on Twitter now…

Much more positive about 2010 than I was this time 2009. Here’s hoping it stays that way! Now that the silly season is out of the way, expect some regular blogging…

Charge those glasses; it’s 2010!!

2008’s Top 10 Video Clips.

And so it begins; the obligatory list season. As usual, I’ll kick it all of with my 10 favourite video clips of the year. Whether or not these songs are released in 2008 or 2009 doesn’t matter; the clip surfaced in 2008 (excluding #7, which surfaced after I’d compiled my list last year), and that’s all that matters to me.

01.  GIRLS ALOUD – The Loving Kind

Finally! They’ve given us something worth watching. After years of still-quite-good but cheap-looking video clips, Girls Aloud have blown me completely out of the water with this, the latest for their upcoming single “The Loving Kind.” This is proper, pop star territory, and the clip alone is solid enough to launch them properly in other countries, don’t you think?

02. LILY ALLEN – The Fear

Everything feels right in the world now that Lily’s making music again, doesn’t it? And this clip is a million levels of adorable. Naturally, it all comes complete with that infamous Allen bite you either love or hate. No matter what she does, or who she slags off, I just cannot hate her. There’s something very special about Lily…

03.  JUSTICE – Stress

This caused a bit of a ruckus when released earlier this year, so much so I had emails from people condemning me and the website for hailing it as a piece of brilliance. Whatever. The clip is still gold, and you can read whatever it was I crapped on about in regards to it by clicking here.

04.  MIAMI HORROR – Don’t Be On With Her

Miami Horror wanted to make an authentic 80’s looking video clip for his televisual debut, and I think it’s safe to say he’s hit a bloody home run with this. An absolute corker and a rock-solid throwback to an era when video clips were important, and not relegated to a tiny screen on YouTube.

05.  VAN SHE – Changes

There’s something quite charming about this clip, which is essentially a bunch of photographs put together as a film from one of the boys many tours of Japan this year. It’s just really, really cute, and looks rather mindblowing on a HI-DEF big screen TV.

06.  THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS – The Age Of The Understatement

Epic.

07.  ASHLEE SIMPSON – Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)

Simpson does Salvador Dali, whilst still retaining all of her pop credentials. Jessica Who?

08.  ROISIN MURPHY – You Know Me Better

Subtle brilliance. And how’s about those divine costumes?

09.  ROISIN MURPHY – Movie Star

Anyone that pays homage to John Waters and Divine deserves a pat on the back in my books. But when that someone is Roisin Murphy, well, a pat turns into a gigantic hug. Something I got from the woman herself earlier this year.

10.  MUSCLES – The Lake

Even if he doesn’t appear in the clip (boo!), this is still a stunningly pieced bit of music video. That sequence at the end with the disgruntled old man clasping onto the woman’s foot reminds me, strangely, of Kristin Davis’ death scene on Melrose Place. Bravo!

Talk Like That… with Julian From The Presets.

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to have a chat down the blower with Julian Hamilton (pictured, right, with his fellow band-mate, the delicious/spunky/very-yum-indeed Kim Moyes, left) from Aussie duo The Presets. The band have an unbelievable new album out (Apocalypso,) a new and very-much sold out Australian tour, and single (This Boy’s In Love) to promote. Whilst I managed to touch on said promotional topics, the conversation eventually lead into Julian declaring something as being “big watery shit.”

You’re just going to have to read on to find out what that shitful watery thing actually is.

Well hello there Julian.
Hello Adem, how are you?

Well, very well. Let’s talk!
Yes, let’s!

Congratulations on the new album Apocalypso, it’s very good Julian…
Thank you! We hoped it would be a good progression from Beams. You sort of hope you get better at this stuff over the years (laughs.)

I guess it’s the norm for an artist to say their most recent work is their best – so is Apocalypso better than Beams?
Um yeah, in all the musical and nerdy ways definitely, we’ve gotten better at production, mixing and all that other boring stuff, and also the song writing’s gotten better, the lyrics, that kind of crap.

How long did it take you to make the new record?
We spent so much time on the road touring for Beams, so once we were into it all it actually happened quite quickly. We did a bunch of scrappy ideas at the beginning of last year when we had a couple of weeks off, so when we finally got home at the end of last year, we pretty much finished the whole record in 3 months. We finished “My People” first and that was the hardest to get finished, but when we did everything just got a little bit easier from there.

Fairly quick process then.
“Talk Like That” and “Eucalyptus” were written and recorded, ready to go in a week. So yeah, definitely so.

A couple of weeks back you were lodged in between Mariah Carey and Vanessa Amorosi on the ARIA singles chart. Weird, or brilliant?
(Chuckles) It’s brilliant! That’s where we’ve always wanted to be! Imagine being lodged between those two… Seriously though, we’re definitely happy to be in the pop charts. We’ve not really changed what we do though, we just worked really hard for years and years, and I think eventually people kind of realised what we were doing was fun and that they wanted to enjoy it too.

Was there really ever any commercial radio support for any of the singles off Beams?
No, not at all.

What do you think has changed their minds?
I dunno what’s happened this time around. Everyone seems to like it though and we’re thrilled.

That diva-lodged single, “My People,” it’s quite the political number…
It’s one of those funny things where, you’re writing a song and have an idea of what it’s about in your head, but once it hits the ears of music fans, these kids can interpret it however they like, and I’m really happy that song has been adopted as a bit of a Presets party anthem for these kids that really just want to have a good time. And while it may have been written about the governments dealings with the refugee situation in Australia, it’s certainly taken on a separate meaning with the people who’ve made a connection with it.

On the new album there’s a track called “If I Know You” which is either a little bit gay, or a little bit White Town “Your Woman…”
It can be taken however you like really, and that’s the beauty of this stuff, we do really like to twist genders and twist ideas around, this way people really can interpret that however they want.

What was the meaning as you wrote it, though?
To have a girl break up song, just sung with balls.

Speaking of such things, that new clip of yours is a bit gay too Julian.
Well that’s the thing, we got all these pictures and treatments [from potential directors] for the video, pitching ideas like ‘boy and girl, running into the forest,’ ‘boy and girl, holding hands on a busy street,’ when FINALLY we got this idea that came along which said ‘two male models wrestling in milk.’ Got it, that’s our video! We weren’t really worried about being perceived as gay, we were more worried that people would think we were a little bit too into milk…

I can see the headlines now; The Presets – Fetish Pioneers.
Nice & milky!

Is it safe to say the clip was a little bit inspired by Pet Shop Boys’ DOMINO DANCING video?
We really love the Pet Shop Boys, pop music that’s really heavily inspired by dance music. Ultimately that’s what we’re doing as well. But I actually haven’t seen the clip!

Shock!
You’d have to ask the director as the whole idea came from him. I’m actually going to have to see this clip now.

Good to see you’ve been getting your shirt off of late too Jules…
I don’t like to but they make me do it because I’ve got such a good body.

I’m guessing that Kim’s not entirely sold on the idea though anymore?
Kim likes the idea of me getting my shirt off. (Laughs) Nah, there was indeed a time when we both used to do it, but he has really nice clothes now, so he’d just prefer to show those off instead.

Well, maybe he can wear some nice pants and unbutton his shirt all the way for us in the future?
I will pass on your advice Adem.

I would like that Jules, thank you. Now, have you guys got the next single sorted?
Yeah I think it’s gonna be “Talk Like That.” We’re getting new treatments for the video coming through, we got a really good idea which came through yesterday. Kim and I would be partying inside what would essentially be this big mouth. So we’re looking forward to that. It’s a good fun song.

So when Are You The One (a single from first album Beams) was splashed over virtually every television program in America, what were your thoughts?
Cash! (Rapturous laughter.) I immediately thought of all the cash we were going to make!

Were your expectations met?
Oh look, stuff like The OC and C.S.I. paid very well, definitely.

That’s right, one of the 368 television programs it was featured on was The OC…
It’s just one of those funny things. We were touring in America and found out that The OC were going play our song on the show. We were in Miami at the time and were really excited, so we raced back to the hotel after sound check to watch it, sat through the whole damn episode and there it was, all chopped up in the background with some blonde bimbo flailing her hair about.

An anti-climax?
Well, it was the last time I really made an effort just to hear my song on the television (laughs.)

You paid tribute to Madonna’s “Hung Up” with a remix called “Hung Down” a few years ago; do you know if she’s heard it?
No, I don’t actually.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that she was a fan.
Oh really? Apparently will.I.am saw us play and really dug us, told someone he wanted to work with us even. Our rep also told us that Kanye West thinks we’re ‘ill.’

Ill!!!
Ill! I know that, in the world of pop, ‘ill’ means something is quite good, which is a stark contrast to its meaning in the world of medicine really.

Well Kanye’s just worked on the new Madonna album…
There you go! Maybe they all sat around together listening to The Presets before writing, being really ill (laughs.)

Speaking of pop, you’ve been arranging fruit and vegetables and ironing shirts for Popjustice of late; tell me Jules, what do you have against cherry tomatoes?
Cheery tomatoes, (very deep sigh.) I was worried that this would become an issue.

What, your vehemently passionate hatred towards them?
Very worried Adem.

There are probably dozens of cherry tomato fans out there who’ve since returned their copies of Apocalypso because of your animosity.
I dunno, they’re just… so small. I really like the big tomatoes. I guess I’ve just eaten too many cherry tomatoes which taste like shit; they just piss me off man.

Was there maybe a fruit or vegetable you preferred more than asparagus that wasn’t made available in your dressing room that particular night?
Big tomatoes. Real tomatoes with real flavour! Actually, that’s the best thing about touring Europe, because the tomatoes actually taste like tomatoes over there, and not like the watery, pasty white chemical shit we have here.

Our tomatoes aren’t as they used to be, are they?
They really aren’t. Our big tomatoes taste like over sized cherry tomatoes. Big watery shit.

All your cherry tomato bashing happened whilst on tour in the UK yes?
Yeah it did.

How did that tour work out for you then?
It was good, we’ve been to the UK about five times now, and this time around shows were selling out and things just sort of went a lot better for us, it was really good heaps of fun.

Has it been harder kicking things off over there?
Yeah, it’s quite interesting, we actually thought the UK would be a lot easier for us to crack, but it was initially harder for us over there than it was in the US.

It’s usually the other way around really.
Yeah exactly. It was pretty cool, they sort of took to us quite quickly in States.

What about V Festival; all went swimmingly yes?
It was fun, really cool. Gold Coast was the craziest. I dunno what it is about the Gold Coast but their crowd just knows how to go a bit crazy.

Let’s talk about Billy Corgan and his on-stage rant of abuse which was hurled at you. [Let me paint the picture for you. The Presets are playing to a mammoth crowd at V Festival in Perth. Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins (ask you parents,) annoyed that the music coming from the stage next door did not resemble self-indulgent, wanky guitar solos, launched into a tirade against The Presets, DJs and dance music in general, ranting about how the genre and its pioneers were all has-beens, that they and their sound were past it.]
Okay…

Did you bump into him at all behind the scenes?
No we didn’t. He had his own separate little area, away from the plebs I guess.

So no face to face confrontation?
No, no. But yeah we heard he’d done that at a couple of shows because we were playing at the same time, apparently we were too loud or some shit. To be honest, he was probably jealous because the crowd we had was evidently bigger than the crowd he had.

Interesting to hear him calling you has-beens… surely the irony is not lost in that statement?
Oh god no, definitely not lost! (Laughs.) Oh look, fuck, I don’t want to start some kind of war…

No, go on…
They had their thing and they were really good, I’m just a little bit sorry he felt he had to diss what we were doing in order to get some attention. We were having fun, the crowd was too, so whatever hey?

What about Roisin Murphy? Were you allowed to try on any of her hats?
I wanted to try on that white see-through top she was wearing! She had some cool outfits.

Maybe you should have asked to arrange them in order of your least favourite to most?
(More rapturous laughter.) She probably wouldn’t have a least favourite though really, and she’d be incredibly offended if anyone suggested they had one. You couldn’t really find the equivalent of a cherry tomato in her outfits even if you tried (laughter once more.)

Let’s talk about other peoples pop music. The most important thing I could ever ask you Jules is what your thoughts on Girls Aloud are?
I saw them everywhere on television while we were touring in the UK. But yeah man, they’re really cool.

What else?
Whenever I hear Maroon 5, I get really happy. Like, almost as if I’ve consumed too much cough medicine.

I can relate.
Exactly. Feeling really dreamy and, I guess, a bit gooish? You just feel kind of slow and happy, very intense.

Julian Hamilton from The Presets, good luck with touring and the album campaign, it’s been a pleasure.
Pleasure is all mine mate, thanks for the chat!

Róisín Bread.

Róisín Murphy is, without a doubt, one of the greatest pop stars of our time. A career that’s spanned over 13 years, Murphy’s unique blend of stage presence, vocal ability and entertainment have always fascinated me. Due to a lapse in judgment, I missed the last time (which would be their actual last time) Moloko toured through Australia for the Good Vibrations festival in 2004, and never forgave myself for it. So when it was announced that our little Raisin would be bringing her multitude of hats down under this year, I was incredibly ecstatic and adamant I would not miss out again.

The meeting of Murphy and 1,000 minds was held at the iconic Billboard Nightclub (though, these days, it would rather you called it Billboard: The Venue,) an old stomping ground of mine which I was eventually, at one point, a staff member of. Over those years I had accumulated a barrel of memories and good times, but never have I had so much fun on that dancefloor as I did with Róisín hovering over me.

First of all, there was no support act, which I found not only brilliant, but very Róisín. Just a DJ playing some songs who was relegated off to the side, audience completely blinded to where he was actually playing from. Double brilliant. After about an hour of waiting around, louder music began beaming from the speakers and I immediately recognised the instrumental house-groove from the “Live At Ancienne Belgique” CD — she was opening with “Cry Baby.”

A coat-rack was made visible to the side of the stage, containing a plethora of hats and various jackets and costumes. I knew there’d be plenty of outfits, but I had no idea she would be changing on the side of the stage! The full-house roared as Murphy’s back up singers (who my best friend Ben & I named ‘Jamelia‘ and ‘Jade Macrae‘ because — no shit — they looked exactly like them) emerged shortly after the band (who were all INCREDIBLY HOT — MY GOD — so many beautiful boys playing instruments!) before Murphy, finally, pranced onto the stage donning a stunning purple hat, a black tailored suit with a white tank top underneath. Knowing full well that her white number was see-through, Róisín enraptured even more hysterical screams from the audience as she began flashing a nipple here and there. Never have I been more excited to see a ladies nipple! Attention was quickly diverted to her pink gloves (remember Rachel’s Gloves™? The same pair, which does pose an interesting question — one that I plan on investigating at some point — as to whether there is indeed a curse behind those gloves? Remember, they were also worn by that Louise slapper. Not very well, mind, but nonetheless, worn,) and her out-of-this-world heels.

“Oh, this is super heel.”

The setlist stuck firmly to the “Live At Ancienne Belgique” format; following “Cry Baby” was “You Know Me Better” (I’m quite hard pressed to pick any handful of ‘best performances’ of the night, but this was definitely one of them,) “Checkin’ On Me,” and “Dear Miami” (outstanding stuff.) “Primitive” followed and, being one of my favourite tracks from the “Overpowered” album, I was one excited punter. Murphy stalked about the stage, singing into the ears of each member of her band as prowled she about, animalistic, just like the song. Eventually, by the second chorus, she found her way in front of me and we both began to spit lyrics passionately at each other. Her gaze stuck with me for the duration of that powerful chorus, before breaking it with the bulging of her eyes. She seemed very pleased with my reaction which is maybe why this behavior occurred another 6 or 7 times throughout the evening.  It was around this time she also said that Melbourne was ” a lot more friendlier than Sydney.”  You can just imagine the fierce roar that followed.

The recreation of “Sow Into You” was gorgeous and delighted the fans to no end. “Footprints” followed, and The Raisin and I shared another intense-glare moment. “Movie Star” saw another fabulous costume and hat change and, more importantly, the introduction of a chair as dance-routine prop. !!!!

“Scarlet ribbons for my chair.”

“Scarlet Ribbon” and her Handsome Boy Modeling School collaboration “The Truth” followed, with Murphy TOTALLY rocking that rap. Crowd = lapping that shit up. Recreating the Moloko classic “Forever More” (one of my very favourite Moloko songs) was an incredibly brave move, and one that completely paid off. Without a doubt, the new Róisín-live-version of that track is THE definitive version. Clocking in at just over 10 minutes, it could have easily gone for 15 and I still would have wished for it to go longer. As she held hands with her back-up singers, singing together and looking lovingly into the audience, reminiscing back on it now, this was probably THE most emotionally satisfying moment of the show. Breathtaking stuff, I would kill to witness that again.

“Checkin’ On Me Arse there Jamelia?”

Next up was her “Let Me Know/Reach” fusion, which — with its unashamedly funky-diva-of-house approach, tore the roof down. Following that was “Overpowered,” another absolute highlight of the show. One of the roadies emerged in the pit below the stage with a giant wind-machine (!), before Murphy eventually returned to the stage in a black, frilly number that totally kicked butt as it swayed, being blown about by so much wind. The strobe light effects throughout “Overpowered” were killer; almost fatal, even. As the 9+ minute version of this acid-303-powerhouse of a song began climaxing, Murphy, already dancing about crazy-like to the strobe lights, turned her incredible white hat/plate into a MOON MASK.

“I am not a doctor.”

Fucking. Amazing. I don’t think I’ve screamed so much in delight in all my life.

Returning for an encore with “Tell Everybody” (another gaze-moment,) and “Ramalama (Bang Bang)” — my absolute FAVOURITE track from her “Ruby Blue” album — capped off a truly invigorating evening in fine form. The night went from strength to strength, as I managed to secure a meeting with Murphy afterwards. We spoke just as she was leaving the venue at around 2:15am, and she was wonderful to myself and Ben. She was too tired to take any photos (for a split second I was annoyed, but realised just how very Róisín it was and totally lapped it up for what it was; her being a hot pop star,) but chatted with us, asked us our names, said she loved seeing us up the front singing along to the songs and, just before leaving, said; “come on then, giss’ a kiss!”

Róisín Murphy kissed my cheek, and I hers. So many levels of ace.

I have always loved this woman, have always dug her musical output, but nothing could prepare me for that show, not even having heard the actual set dozens of times on CD before. This was a proper performance; she could have easily gotten up on that stage and just sung song after song, and, don’t get me wrong, I would have been happy with that. But this was so much more than just a live concert. It was a show; a theatrical performance. Madonna on a budget! I’ve been to a heap of shows before in my years as a music fan, but there has been no show as glittering or outstanding as Róisín’s at Billboard last Friday. It truly was the greatest concert I have ever been to. A world of pop music without Róisín Murphy in it is the type of popworld I do not wish to imagine; we NEED Murphy to keep going, because it’s evident she has so much more creativity to offer.

I was also impressed with the amount of dancing that went on… the girl can move, and she did it so very often!

There are plenty more photos aside from the ones below to come. I took a stack on my friend Clare’s camera (including a very hot nipple shot) after mine temporarily decided to die several minutes into the show, so once I get them I’ll pop them up. In the meantime, this should do you fine. There’s also a rather hilarious review of this very show over on last.fm, in which user AppleKabukiSuri compared the Murphy show with the Jesus And Mary Chain one from the night before. A very good read.

Please credit the website if you use any of those piccies.

Oh, and big shout out to the Murphy-crew for the evening; Ben, Clare, Jo, Krissy (with her tit out,) and Sera – what a night!

iThink ‘08

As the Summer (or winter, depending on where you are geographically) season draws to a close, we inch closer and closer into the third month of 2008; it’s already going by so quickly.  It feels like just yesterday I was seeing in the New Year when in actual fact it was 55 days ago… oi vey!

I haven’t really popped up any sort of list containing the songs that have, thus far in, tickled my musical fancy, so I thought now was as good a time as ever.  In chart form, here are the 10 best songs 2008 – whether they be singles or album tracks – has brought us so far.

01.       Van She – Strangers
02.       Van She – Changes
03.       Axle Whitehead – I Don’t Do Surprises
04.       Róisín Murphy – You Know Me Better
05.       Pigeon Detectives – I’m Not Sorry
06.       Cut Copy – Lights & Music
07.       Ashlee Simpson – Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)
08.       Sam Sparro – Black & Gold
09.       Goldfrapp – Caravan Girl
10.       Duffy – Rockferry

I cannot wait for people to hear Van She’s “Strangers” because it is so sublime.  The synths during the chorus are magnetic and fierce.  “Changes” is just as ace and is also single material (and now that I’ve realised how similar the words “strangers” and “changes” sound when said over the phone, I’m back to being unsure as to which of the two songs are going to be the NEXT Van She single. Boo!) – sounded exxxxcellent live on the weekend and the boys told me it was their favourite track from the new record.

Axle’s debut “I Don’t Do Surprises” still impresses me, as does the man himself.  I spoke to him on Friday afternoon and the interview will be online later this week; went really well and he was incredibly charming.  Miss Murphy’s “You Know Me Better” somehow manages to become a stronger song the more I listen to it; and I already loved it immensely.  I’m aware that the Pigeon Detectives song in my list was released in 2006 and then again last year, but I’ve only just discovered the guys in the last 2 months and that song is so brilliant, I just couldn’t leave it off.

Cut Copy’s new single is a delicious taste of what’s to come from their hotly anticipated sophomore album, and Ashlee Simpson’s bonkers “Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)” sounds like a stripped down homage to Madonna’s “Burning Up.”  I love it!  Both Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” and Duffy’s “Rockferry” were introduced to me by the lovely xolondon, who has just written a stellar review of the new Goldfrapp album, which the track “Caravan Girl” comes from.

Anyway, what are your favourite tracks of the year so far?

Here are numbers 11 – 20…

11.       Goldfrapp – A&E
12.       Van She – Talkin’
13.       Girls Aloud – Can’t Speak French (Jeremy Wheatley Radio Edit)
14.       Kylie Minogue – Carried Away
15.       Courtney Love – Never Go Hungry Again
16.       Duffy – Mercy
17.       Courtney Love – Happy Ending Story
18.       Lykke Li – Little Bit
19.       Utah Saints – Something Good ‘08 (Van She Radio Edit)
20.       Rihanna & Klaxons – Umbrella (Live @ The BRIT Awards)

Live Baby Live.

LOTS of live music news to report today. I – quite excitedly – posted earlier this morning of the news that Róisín Murphy was coming to our shores in April for the V Festival.  The side show I’ll be checking out is being held at Melbourne’s ICONIC Billboard Nightclub on April the 7th.  That exciting news kicked off my morning and the live goss only grew as the day went on.

Whilst the following names have not been revealed as yet  to media, I can somewhat exclusively reveal that the likes of Robyn, Van She (pictured) and Tommy Lee (yes, as in Pamela & Tommy Lee) will be on the same bill together for an event being held at Birrarung Marr.  That’s all I can really say for now but once news becomes official, I’ll keep you informed.

Speaking of Van She, the boys – who are currently in Japan – are about to embark on their “Cat & The Eye Tour,” with the first show taking place at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on February 21st.  The boys also play Geelong’s Barwon Club Hotel on the 23rd… no doubt if you’re going to either of those dates, I’ll see you there.  Full list of Australia-wide dates can be found on their MySpazz page.  I was quite the happy camper with all of this brilliant tour news.  But then something ELSE arrived in my inbox…

Whilst it’s somewhat old news that McFly are currently recording their fourth studio album in Australia, the sudden announcement of Australian concert dates completely caught me off guard.  February 23rd and March 1st have been penciled in for McFly’s first ever shows down under.  What a pity that both of the shows are being held in Sydney.  WTF?! No Melbourne?  Once again Melbourne is disregarded as Sydney takes precedence.  When Girls Aloud came to Oz in 2006, their only live performance was held in Sydney.  Take That in 2007 – same story.  Spice Girls were officially scheduled – and canceled – a show only in Sydney, whilst the likes of Mika (who I don’t really care for anyway, but that’s beside the point) and Joss Stone all made one-off appearances in Sydney early last year, leaving Melbourne off their ‘to-perform’ lists.

Anyway, I’m really angry and incredibly upset that I won’t get to see one of my all time favourite bands play their first Australian shows purely because of the distance.  And before you start saying I could fly out to Sydney to see them, you have absolutely no idea how broke I really am at the moment.

Come to Melbourne boys.  Make one of my dreams come true and allow me the opportunity to watch you do what you do best in the flesh.
